How to Design a Life Full of Energy and Adventure

Using our systems thinking approach, there are four key parts to designing a life full of energy and adventure:

  1. Where are you at now

  2. Where do you want to be

  3. What do you need to get there

  4. Who is going to do the work

Let’s dive into the details..

This is all about taking a step back, zooming out, and taking a good honest look at where you are at in different parts of your life. There are many ways to look at where you’re at now, but some useful questions to guide the process include:

  1. Money: how much freedom/control do you have over your money and finances?

  2. Time:how much freedom/control do you have over your time and daily life?

  3. Location: how much freedom/control do you have over your location and where you base yourself?

  4. Relationships: how much freedom/control do you have over your relationships, whether that’s professional, romantic, or personal relationships?

  5. Purpose: how much freedom/control do you have over your sense of purpose or direction in life?

To help facilitate this process there are many questions that you can ask yourself or discuss with other people. Some useful ones can include:

  • What are you satisfied with?

  • What are you dissatisfied with?

  • What is your biggest challenge?

  • What areas do you want to change right now?

“The most dangerous risk of all - the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later” ~ Randy Komisar

Part 2 focuses on where you want to be in your life. Being 100% honest with yourself, and reflecting on the ideas that emerged from Part 1 above, where do you want to be in terms of freedom/control over all the different aspects of your life.

There are many questions that you can ask yourself, some that we’ve found useful with Courage clients include:

  • What does your ideal day look like?

  • What does a beautiful life look like?

  • What is your definition of success?

  • What kind of person do you want to be?

  • What sort of life do you want to lead?

These questions can help you shape more clearly the end goal of “a life full of energy and adventure” that you actually have in mind. Once you clarify where you want to be there is only one direction - forward!

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” ~ Albert Einstein

There can be many things that you need, but let’s look at four high-impact approaches that have worked well in the past:

#1 Job Shifting

#2 Mindset Shifting

#3 Radical Sabbatical

#4 Try Something New

#1 Job Shifting

Job Shifting - Make shifts in your current situation, for example:

  • Moving to part time

  • Going down to 4 days per week

  • Shifting work schedule

  • Working from home

  • Moving internally

  • Spending more / less time with certain people

  • Exploring a Digital nomad lifestyle

  • Freelancing vs full-time with current employer

  • ...Have a conversation - Asking for what you want

#2 Mindset Shifting

Mindset Shifting - Change what you think about work, for example:

  • Find meaning in your current situation

  • Get meaning outside of work

  • Soul work vs. Survival work

  • Rethink your tasks

  • ...Hobby vs. Job vs. Career vs. Calling/Vocation

#3 Radical Sabbatical

Radical Sabbatical - Take time off. As discussed in our post on [How to Avoid Burnout], the world isn’t going to end if you take a break and get away from it all. For example:

  • Quitting

  • Sabbatical / leave of absence

  • Delayed gap year

  • Career break

  • Pilgrimage / travel with purpose

  •  ...while working on something new / different

#4 Try Something New

Try something new - Test your way in a new direction, for example:

  • Launching new projects as experiments

  • Learn by doing

  • Trial days

  • Volunteer your skills and knowledge

  • Start before you’re ready

  • ...While you’re still in your current job

At this point, how much change do you feel you need? Try this - brainstorm 5+ ideas that could help you get there, whether they are big leaps or baby steps it’s all progress…

Mostly… You :P

  • Give yourself the permission to do what you feel is right,

  • Take 100% responsibility

  • Remember the law of GOYA - Get Off Your Ass :)

There can be many barriers, friction and obstacles in the way of your progress, but it often comes down to answering one simple question: “What if…?”

Try this - think of 5 “What if” scenarios, fears or excuses that you feel are holding you back. For each “What if”, tackle it head on with a counter “Well then I’ll”

What if [X happens] ??

Well then I’ll [do Y] !!

“If you really want something you’ll find a way. If you don’t you’ll find an excuse” (Jim Rohn)

It’s important to remember along the way that you’re not alone - you can always look for new skills, knowledge and support from around you including:

  • Keyword searches

  • Your personal networks

  • Your professional networks

  • Social media posts, ads, blogs, relevant pages

  • Event listings, speakers, organisers

  • Business websites, Personal websites

  • Groups online and in person (Facebook, Meetup, Funzing)

  • Professional organisations and directories

  • Coaches, therapists, mentors, peer networks

  • Learning institutions, social clubs

  • Job platforms (Escape the city)

  • Startup business platforms (Angel list)

  • Word of mouth, recommendations

  • Anywhere else you can think of :)

To get you rolling in the right direction try this fast and effective goal setting activity -

My goal for [deadline date] is to [X] in order to [Y]

Set your goal, share it with someone who cares, and check up on each other’s progress. At Courage, we’ve found that taking action is the fastest way to learn, grow and thrive with more energy and adventure in your life. Enjoy the ride :)
